A motorcyclist and his passenger were injured on Thursday in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of U.S. Highway 20 and Verplank Road, Burns Harbor Police said.

According to police, at 3:28 p.m. motorcyclist Ronald E. Sonaty, 64, of Hobart, was attempting to turn left from northbound Verplank Road onto westbound U.S. 20 when he and his passenger were struck by a passenger vehicle turning left from Arnell Chevrolet onto eastbound U.S. 20.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was Peter W. Kennedy, 39, of LaPorte.

Sonaty sustained an injury to his arm, police said; his passenger, Donna M. Sonaty, 62, also of Hobart, sustained injuries to the hip and leg.

Kennedy advised police that he “did not see the motorcycle,” that he “heard screams but never saw the bike.”

Sonaty and his passenger were transported to Porter Regional Hospital, police said.
