A Chesterton resident was pronounced dead on Thursday at Loyola University
Medical Center in Maywood, Ill. from a combination of a lung disease and
thermal burns sustained from an incident earlier this month, the Cook County
Medical Examiner’s office said.
Jose Torres, 63,
of the 600 block of South 20th St., was taken to Loyola on May 14 after
initially being treated at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Hobart for burns
sustained from accidentally catching fire while smoking, said the Cook
County Medical Examiner’s records department. Torres was pronounced dead at
11:04 p.m. on Thursday, the agency said.
An autopsy
conducted by the Medical Examiner’s office on Friday determined Torres died
of two causes: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and thermal
burns.
Chesterton Fire
Department said they do not have a record of responding to Torres’
residence.
