A man walking down the middle of the Norfolk Southern track in Chesterton was struck and killed by a train on Sunday.

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris identified the man as Stephen Grieger, 49, formerly of Michigan City and currently homeless.

The incident occurred approximately 200 feet east of the Norfolk Southern grade-crossing at 15th Street, Chesterton Police said.

According to police, at 2:41 p.m. the engineer of an eastbound train which had just switched from the south set of track to the north one observed a pedestrian walking down the center of the north track, his back to the train.

The engineer sounded the horn but the man did not move from the track and was struck. His body was located beneath a rail car, police said.

The train was traveling at around 35 miles per hour at the time, police said.

Harris told the Chesterton Tribune that no autopsy will be held but that a toxicology screen will be conducted.

Harris added that he has not yet ruled on the manner of death.
