An Aurora, Ill., man was killed on Sunday after the car in which he was a passenger struck a semi head-on on the Indiana Toll Road in LaPorte County, the Indiana State Police said.

The victim was identified as Robertino Maldonado, 57.

According to police, at 7:16 p.m. Maldonado’s wife, Maria Maldonado, 56, was westbound in the left lane of the Toll Road when she attempted to change lanes, lost control of her 2010 Honda, hit the guard rail to the right, bounced across both westbound lanes and into the median, then entered the eastbound lanes, struck another guard rail, and ricocheted into the path of an oncoming 2011 Freightliner semi.

The semi was driven by Lawrence Letourneau, 54, of Duluth, Minn.

Robertino Maldonado had to be extricated from the Honda and was pronounced dead at the scene by the LaPorte County Coroner, police said.

Maria Maldonado was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. Both she and her husband were wearing their seat belts.

Letourneau was also wearing a seat belt and was not injured. His load of plastic stayed intact.

All eastbound lanes except the shoulder were closed until 9:27 p.m., police said.
