Judge dismisses welfare fraud charge

Back To Front Page

A charge of welfare against a Chesterton resident has been dismissed.

On July 17, Porter Circuit Court Judge Mary Harper dismissed the charge against Jennifer Shannon, at the request of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Reason for the dismissal: prosecutorial discretion.

The charge was dismissed with prejudice, which means that Shannon may not be re-charged in the same case.

An identical charge against Shannon in Lake County was also dismissed earlier this summer.

Shannon was originally charged after an investigation by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, which said at the time that she received more than $13,000 in public assistance while earning an income from her ownership of a bar and a fireworks business in Lake County.
