A Jackson Township man critically injured earlier this month in a crash on
U.S. Highway 6 in Jackson Township has died of his injuries.
Daniel Winn, 36, died on Friday afternoon at Porter Valparaiso Hospital
Campus, Porter County Coroner Vicki Deppe told the Chesterton Tribune today.
According to the Porter County Sheriff’s Police, at 3:29 p.m. on May 13 Winn
was westbound on U.S. 6, approaching C.R. 350E, when he crossed the center
line and struck a tree on the south side of the road on the front driver’s
side quarter panel. Police said that Winn’s 1998 Ford Windstar then flipped
onto its roof and struck another tree, causing Winn to be ejected as the
vehicle spun off the second tree and came to rest on its roof.
Winn sustained head and neck injuries, police said.
Police also said that Winn registered a blood alcohol content of .294
percent on a blood test conducted at the hospital, nearly four times the
legal limit of .08 percent.
Also injured in the crash were Winn’s front-seat passenger, Connie Shupe,
34, of Jackson Township, who sustained an arm injury, police said; and two
children, aged 4 and 6, who complained of head pain. All three passengers
were treated at Porter hospital.
