An Indianapolis woman was killed Sunday after walking into traffic on I-65
in Jasper County, the Indiana State Police said.
The victim was identified as Betty Rush, 66.
According to police, at 9:10 p.m. Rush “for unknown reasons” walked out into
the right lane of northbound I-65 from the outer shoulder at the 230 mile
marker, near the Demotte/Roselawn exit. A Gary motorist, driving a 2013
Hyundai, was unable to avoid striking Rush, who was then also struck by a
semi-tractor trailer driven by a Dallas, N.C., trucker, police said.
“It is also believed Rush was struck by several more vehicles who may not
have realized it was a person,” police said.
Rush—whose vehicle was later found at a local truck stop—was pronounced dead
at the scene. No other persons were injured.
The right lane of northbound I-65 was closed until 3 a.m. today.
