An Atkins, Va., trucker was seriously injured on Monday morning when he rolled his rig on I-65 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

The Indiana State Police investigated a semi rollover crash that required an air rescue for the driver involved.

According to police, at 9:14 a.m. Charles Hayden, 36, was northbound on I-65, just south of U.S. Highway 30, when for unknown reasons he swerved to the left and then drove off the roadway and onto the right shoulder. Hayden’s 2000 Kenworth tractor then overturned and came to rest upside down, while his trailer lost its load, police said.

Hayden was pinned inside the tractor and had to be extricated, police said, after which he was airlifted to the University of Chicago hospital.

Senior Trooper Timothy Grayson took a moment to express his particular gratitude, on behalf of the entire ISP, to Rick Knoflicek and Scott Beishuizen “for their heroic efforts in assisting with the recovery of the injured driver,” police added. “These individuals were among the first to arrive on scene and they went above and beyond the call of duty to assist Trooper Grayson until paramedics arrived.”

All lanes of I-65 were briefly closed during the medivac, then re-opened at 11:02 a.m., police said.
