A trucker died Thursday after rear-ending another semi on I-65 in Lake County, in an accident which ultimately involved four vehicles, the Indiana State Police said.

The victim was identified as Thomas Shanahan, 38, of Crest Hill, Ill., police said.

According to police, at 9:30 p.m. Shanahan, pulling a box trailer, was southbound on I-65 when, just south of the U.S. Highway 30 exit, he rear-ended a second semi, driven by Carlos Salgado, 30, of Chicago.

On impact, Shanahan’s rig swerved off the roadway and into a ditch, causing the trailer to separate from the tractor, which overturned, police said. Shanahan, trapped in the tractor, had to be extricated by the Merrillville Fire Department and was subsequently transported to Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus in Merrillville, where he died of his injuries, police said.

Meanwhile, Salgado’s rig, pushed from behind, struck the rear of a 2003 Ford F-250 driven by James Hemphill, 42, of Demotte, police said, while Hemphill’s vehicle, in turn, struck the rear of a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Randy Cramer, 55, of Northlake, Ill.

Salgado and Cramer escaped injury, police said, but Hemphill was transported to Franciscan Health Crown Point with non-life threatening injuries.

Salgado’s trailer caught fire after impact but the blaze was contained to the rear trailer, police added.

All southbound lanes were closed and traffic was being detoured onto U.S. 30.
