A trucker may have suffered a medical condition on Friday just prior to an accident on I-80/94 in LaPorte County, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 7:59 p.m. Gerard N. Normand, 57, of Oak Park, Ill., was westbound in the left lane of I-80/94 when, three miles east of the U.S. Highway 421/Michigan City exit, he is believed to have suffered a medical condition, causing him to sideswipe a second semi westbound in the right lane.

Normandís 2000 Freightliner then came to rest in a ditch, police said. Normand was airlifted by Med-Flight to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver of the second semi, John W. Burton, 64, escaped injury, and his 2007 Volvo sustained minor damage, police said.

The westbound lanes were closed for approximately four hours, police said. The eastbound lanes were closed for 30 minutes for the landing and take-off of the helicopter.
