The remains of the service dog gone missing after a crash on an I-80/94 off-ramp in Lake County are believed to have been found, the Indiana State Police is reporting.

“It is with great sadness that I must report that this afternoon, INDOT workers located what are believed to be the remains of Jack, the service dog who was reported missing this morning,” police said in a statement released after deadline on Thursday. “It is believed that he sustained fatal injuries at the time of the original crash. Our condolences go out to the family. We appreciate the many phone calls we received from concerned citizens who offered to help locate Jack.”

Jack--a terrier trained to assist the hearing impaired--was a passenger in one of two vehicles which collided on the Grant Street off-ramp early Thursday morning. Jack’s vehicle overturned and police said that he may have run onto or near Grant Street.

The drivers and other passengers in the two vehicles sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported for treatment to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary.
