A Hammond motorcyclist was in critical condition this morning after he tried
to flee police and lost control of his bike on an I-80 entrance ramp in Lake
County, the Indiana State Police said.
According to police, at 1:39 a.m. Charles Spudville, 25, was stopped on
Indianapolis Blvd. for a traffic offense by Hammond Police. As the officer
was approaching him, police said, Spudville fled on his 2001 Honda at a high
rate of speed, attempted to enter eastbound I-80 from the Indianapolis Blvd.
ramp, but failed to negotiate the curve.
Spudville struck the barrier wall, flipped over the wall, and fell 40 feet
to the ground below, police said.
Spudville’s arm was nearly severed, police said. He was transported to
Munster Community Hos-pital and airlifted to Loyola Hospital in Illinois in
critical condition.
