A Lake Village, Ind., motorist led troopers on a brief chase early this
morning on I-80 before being apprehended, the Indiana State Police said.
According to police, at 12:19 a.m. a trooper observed a 2003 Ford Taurus
parked in the “gore area” of the eastbound lanes of I-80 at Burr Street,
that is, in the white-striped triangle between the right lane and the Burr
Street entrance ramp.
On further investigation, the trooper determined that the driver of the
Taurus—later identified as Ted E. Compton, 38—was asleep at the wheel with
the engine running, police said. The trooper knocked on the window to awaken
Compton, who then put the Taurus in gear and fled the scene, police said.
The pursuit lasted for three miles, until Compton exited at Grant Street and
pulled over to the shoulder, police said.
Compton was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated, operating a
vehicle while being an habitual traffic violator, and resisting law
enforcement, police said. He was transported to Lake County Jail.
