A Chesterton
motorist was injured this morning in a two-vehicle accident on I-94 in
Duneland, the Indiana State Police said.
According to
police, at 9 a.m. Nicholas D. Heflin, 34, had just merged onto westbound
I-94 from the Burns Harbor/Porter on-ramp when he tried to move from the
right to the center lane. Police said that Heflin’s 2006 Chevrolet pickup
struck a semi-tractor trailer westbound in the center lane, causing the
pickup to spin in front of the semi, which then pushed it into a snow
embankment on the outer shoulder, where it rolled several times before going
over the concrete median barrier and coming to rest on the eastbound side of
I-94.
Heflin, who was
wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Porter Regional Hospital with
non-life threatening injuries, police said.
The driver of the
semi, Gary M. Nelson, 61, of South Bend, was not injured, police said.
Nelson’s semi was
loaded with general merchandise and no load was lost. The pickup and semi
each sustained approximately $20,000 in damage and both had to be towed.
Also responding to
the scene were the Burns Harbor Police Department, the Porter Fire
Department, and Joe’s Towing, police said.
