A motorist died on Tuesday after rear-ending a semi-tractor trailer at high speed on I-80/94 in Porter County, the Indiana State Police said.

Late today the State Police identified the driver as Augustin J. Carreon, 30 of Porter.

He was driving a 2017 Mazda CX9 at the time of the crash

According to police, at 9:45 p.m. Carreon was westbound on I-80/94 “at a high rate of speed” when, one mile west of the Portage exit, it rear-ended a semi hauling a flatbed trailer loaded with steel, then “immediately” burst into flames.

The driver was unable to escape the vehicle, which sustained heavy front end damage. Passers-by attempted unsuccessfully to open its doors while Trooper Justin Hansen deployed his fire extinguisher “to no avail,” police said.

The driver was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the semi, Michael DeJohn, 48, of Wyoming, Mich., escaped injury.

All westbound traffic was diverted off I-80/94 at the Portage exit until cleanup and reconstruction were completed.

Also responding to the scene were the Portage Fire Department, Porter County Coroner’s Office, and Porter County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
