A Portage resident was arrested Wednesday on charges of operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident after the Indiana State Police said that he struck a trooper’s squad car and didn’t stop.

According to police, at 12:50 p.m. Master Trooper Aaron Segrest had stopped a semi on the outer shoulder of westbound I-80/94, at 7.7 mile marker near the Chase Street overpass, in Lake County, when a black 2001 Dodge Durango left the roadway and struck the driver’s side of his squad car, an unmarked 2004 Ford Crown Victoria with its interior emergency lights activated.

Police said that the Durango’s driver fled but a witness to the crash provided investigators “valuable information” about the suspect vehicle. Both the Durango and its driver, identified as Matthew R. Reynolds, 27, were subsequently located at Reynolds’ residence, police said.

Reynolds was transported to Lake County Jail.

Segrest was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Franciscan St. Anthony’s Health in Crown Point.
