A Gary woman has been charged in connection with a series of thefts committed at the George Ade Rest Plaza on the Indiana Toll Road in Gary, the Indiana State Police said.

Tamara R. Scott was taken into custody at the Majestic Star Casino Hotel in Gary and charged with two counts of forgery, two of theft, two of receiving stolen property, and three of fraud, police said.

A man who jumped from the second floor window of Scott’s hotel room to flee investigators was subsequently identified from personal items recovered in the room. That man, Anthony D. Washington, was taken into custody at his residence in Gary and charged with resisting law enforcement and possession of cocaine.

Scott and Washington were both being held at the Lake County Jail and ISP Det. 1st Sgt. Jeffrey Matson said that he “anticipates filing numerous other charges against Scott and Washington” as the investigation continues.

ISP detectives were investigating a series of nearly 20 thefts and robberies which occurred at the George Ade Rest Plaza, over a period of more than two months, where a woman would steal wallets and cell phones from men while attempting prostitution activity. On several occasions, police said, a male subject would accompany the woman, “brandishing a firearm and taking the items through threat of force,” police said.

Scott was charged after she was identified using the stolen credit card of a victim in Lake Station, police said.
