A South Bend resident was arrested Thursday on charges of possession of
marijuana and dealing in marijuana after a traffic stop on the Indiana Toll
Road in Porter County in which more than 80 pounds of marijuana were found
in his trunk, the Indiana State Police said.
According to police, at 10:29 a.m. Armando M. Bautista, 23, was stopped in
the eastbound lanes of the Toll Road, near the McCool Road overpass, after
an officer clocked him at 60 miles per hour in a zone posted at 40 mph.
“Bautista was very nervous and had inconsistencies in his answers” to the
officer’s questions, police said, and a K-9 unit attached to the U.S. Drug
Enforcement Agency was dispatched to the scene. A search of the vehicle
subsequently revealed “two large compressed bundles of marijuana in the
trunk” with a total weight of 82 pounds, police said.
Bautista was transported to Porter County Jail, where he was being held on
charges of possession of marijuana--over 30 pounds, a Class D felony
punishable by a term of six months to three years; and dealing in
marijuana--over 10 pounds, a Class C felony punishable by a term of two to
Bautista’s 2005 Chevrolet Impala was also seized.
