A South Holland, Ill., man died early this morning when he crashed his vehicle on I-80/94 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

The victim was identified as David Pettiford, 33.

According to police, at 1:08 a.m. Pettiford was westbound at a high rate of speed, traveling under the I-65 overpass near the 12 mile marker, when he possibly hit the rear of a moving semi. The semi continued west and never stopped but Pettiford was trapped in his 2011 Toyota Camry, police said.

On his arrival at the scene, “Trooper John Holmen managed to enter the Camry and found Pettiford unresponsive, not breathing, and with a weak pulse,” police said. “Trooper Holmen was able to provide artificial respiration until emergency medical service arrived.”

Pettiford was transported to North lake Methodist Hospital in Gary, where he was later pronounced dead of massive trauma.

“Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash,” police said.

The right two westbound lanes were closed until approximately 4:30 a.m.
