A trucker was cited on Monday after crashing his rig on I-94 in a construction zone near Portage, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 3:41 p.m. Ray D. Rudibaugh, 71, of Lisbon, Ohio, was westbound on I-94, at the 17 mile marker two miles west of the Portage exit, when another semi merged into his lane, causing him to leave the roadway. Rudibaugh’s rig then hit an impact attenuator and landed partially on top of the concrete barrier wall, police said.

None of Rudibaugh’s load of 34,141 pounds of paper bags was lost and Rudibaugh himself was uninjured but 250 gallons of diesel were spilled, police said. A haz-mat team with the Porter County Environmental Department was dispatched to the scene to assist with cleanup.

The right and middle lanes were closed for two hours, until 5:40 p.m., police said.

Rudibaugh--who was driving for Kuntzman Trucking of Alliance, Ohio--was issued a citation for speeding in a construction zone with workers present, police said.
