A flagman employed by Superior Construction and working on the I-94 overpass
was seriously injured on Monday after being struck by a Chesterton motorist
on Beam Street, Porter Police said.
The flagman was identified as John Starcevich, 57, of Lowell.
According to police, at 1:05 p.m. Jason Shubair, 33, of Chesterton, was
eastbound on Beam Street when, he advised police, he looked down at his
radio and on looking up again “the flagman was suddenly in front of him.”
Shubair stated that he attempted to swerve but struck Starcevich and then
ran into a bundle of rebar, police said.
Starcevich was transported to Porter Regional Hospital, where he underwent
surgery for a broken leg, police said.
Although Shubair advised that he didn’t see the construction site, as he was
approaching from the stop sign at the intersection of Mineral Springs Road,
police said that, at the time of the accident, a crane was parked and a pile
of rebar stacked in the roadway.
The results of a routine toxicology screen are pending, police said, and
“charges will be reviewed for Shubair’s speed, which he stated was between
30 and 40 miles per hour” in a zone posted at 20 mph, police said.
