Twenty persons were arrested or cited during Whiting’s annual Pierogi Festival on Friday and Saturday, the Indiana State Excise Police (ISEP) said.

Excise officers patrolled inside the Pierogi Festival, as well as in the communities of Whiting, Hammond, and East Chicago over the weekend, ISEP said.

Charges filed or citations issued:

* Minor possession of alcohol (seven).

* Open container violation (five).

* Furnishing alcohol to a minor (three).

* Seatbelt violation (three).

* Driving while suspended (three).

* Drug possession (two).

* Minor in a tavern or liquor store (one).

As the enforcement division of the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission, ISEP’s primary mission is “to promote public safety by enforcing Indiana’s Alcoholic Beverage Code,” ISEP said. “While excise officers have the authority to enforce any state law, they focus primarily on alcohol, tobacco and related laws.”
