Half a double-wide ended up on I-94 in Chesterton this morning, blocking an Ind. 49 off-ramp , after breaking loose of its frame, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 10:15 a.m. trucker Tracy L. Blocher, 41, of Pierceton, Ind., was exiting northbound Ind. 49 for westbound I-94 when, as he was rounding the curve, the double-wide half which he was hauling shifted on its frame, causing the bolts to bend and break and the structure to fall, blocking the ramp and roadway.

The 76’ x 16’ double-wide half weighs 40,000 pounds. It sustained “several thousand dollars in damage,” police said.

Blocher--who escaped injury--was driving for Star Fleet Inc. of Goshen, Ind.

He was issued a citation for inadequate securement and inoperative trailer brakes.

Blocher, who was accompanied by two vehicle escorts, was hauling the 2014 Champion mobile home to Sioux City, Iowa.

Waffco Towing was on scene and working to lift the mobile home back onto its frame.

As of deadline, the ramp from northbound Ind. 49 to westbound I-94 and the two right lanes of westbound I-94 were closed.
