Conservation Officers are investigating a boat explosion on Friday across
from the U.S. Coast Guard station on Trail Creek in Michigan City.
According to the
Department of Natural Resources, at 2:30 p.m. three workers with the
Michigan City Port Authority were retrieving swim buoys from the lakefront
for winter storage when their boat exploded.
Alden Hopper, 65,
Timothy Frame, 55, and Daniel Hoepf, 34, all Michigan City residents, were
ejected from the boat into the water, the DNR said, and subsequently
transported to Franciscan Health Michigan City for treatment of non-life
The three were all
wearing USCG-approved lifejackets at the time of the explosion, the DNR
added. “The lifejackets worn by each crew member were a positive
contributing factor in the rescue efforts following the explosion.”
The cause of the
explosion remained undetermined.
