Porter County resident and attorney Stacey Whitten has announced her intention to be the Democrat candidate in the November election for the office of Porter County Prosecuting Attorney

“I have spent several months contemplating a campaign,” Whitten said in a statement released last week. “I have spent time talking to many individuals and families in Porter County as well as members of the criminal justice system and I believe that a change is necessary in the leadership of the Prosecutor’s Office. I firmly believe that I can provide the change and leadership that this county deserves.”

Whitten is a graduate of Indiana University and John Marshall Law School, has been a practicing attorney since 2005, and is currently a partner in the firm Whitten and Whitten in Portage with her husband Dan Whitten.

“As a former public defender, Stacey has handled many criminal cases,” the statement said. “She is currently an Assistant city attorney and serves as a city prosecutor, a position which she has held for the last seven years. In addition to running a successful law practice, Stacey previously worked with struggling mothers and fathers in the Lake County IV-D Child Support Division. While in law school, Stacey also worked in the Lake County Prosecutor’s Drug Unit.

“I am honored to put Stacey Whitten’s name on the November ballot,” Porter County Democrat Chair Jeffery Chidester. “I not only believe that Stacey will be a great candidate, but she will bring a new and fresh perspective to the Porter County Prosecutor’s office. I am also very proud to put the first female candidate for Prosecutor in the history of Porter County on this year’s ballot.”
