Chesterton Police are investigating a report of mail tampering made by a
U.S. Postal Service letter carrier.
According to police, sometime between 3 p.m. Tuesday and 12 p.m. Wednesday
an unknown subject opened mail delivered to a least four addresses: three in
the 1200 and 1300 block of South Park Ave. and one in the 600 block of South
11th Street.
In all cases, police said, Christmas cards were opened from one box, then
replaced in someone else’s box.
It is unknown at this time whether anything was stolen and if so how much
loss was incurred.
The letter carrier later advised police that the same acts appeared to have
occurred selectively in the South Park subdivision and that she reported her
findings to the Chesterton Postmaster. At this time no recipient was able to
say whether anything had been stolen from the mail.
