Two persons were injured on Sunday in a three-vehicle accident on Ind. 49, Chesterton Police said.

According to police, at 5:58 p.m. Jeannene L. Schumacher, 72, of Morgan Township, was northbound on Ind. 49 and approaching a green light at the intersection of Gateway Blvd. Northbound traffic was slowing or had stopped, however, for an emergency vehicle with activated lights which had entered the intersection, police said. Schumacher did not see the emergency vehicle and did not notice the slowed or stopped traffic and rear-ended a second vehicle, police said. The impact of that collision then drove the second vehicle into the rear of a third.

The driver of the second vehicle was Todd A. Moldenhauer, 46, of Valparaiso. The driver of the third vehicle was Magnolia B. Kisala, 40, of Chesterton.

Schumacher complained of chest pain, police said, and her passenger, Dennis P. Skrivan, 68, also of Morgan Township, complained of back pain. Both were transported to Porter Regional Hospital for treatment, police said.

Police estimated total damage to Schumacher’s 2011 Chevrolet Equinox, Moldenhauer’s 2008 Chevrolet Silverado, and Kisala’s 2005 Toyota Sienna at up to $50,000.
