Chesterton Police are attempting to locate the driver of a blue Jeep Liberty
who left the scene of a three-vehicle accident on Tuesday in which six
persons were injured.
According to police, at 3:26 p.m. the driver of the Jeep was southbound on
Ind. 49 when he rear-ended a second vehicle stopped for traffic north of
East Porter Ave. The impact of the collision then forced the second vehicle
into the rear of a third.
All three drivers were instructed by responding officers to get their
vehicles off Ind. 49 and into the parking lot of the Horizon Bank on
Roosevelt Street. All three did so but the driver identified by another of
the motorists as the one who caused the initial collision subsequently left
the scene without speaking to an officer, police said.
One of the two motorists complained of back pain and the other of shoulder
pain. Four passengers in the third vehicle, all of them teens, also reported
back pain, police said.
