Chesterton Police are seeking the driver in a hit-and-run accident on Wednesday.

According to police, at 7:25 p.m. the driver of a black 1998 Kia Sephia was eastbound on Joliet Road at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate the right turn onto southbound Tower Street, drove through a front yard, and struck a large boulder and decorative tree, leaving large ruts in the lawn some 25 feet in length and four inches deep.

Witnesses advised police that the driver was going at least 60 to 70 miles per hour while approaching the curve.

The driver then fled the scene on foot in the direction of the Prairie Duneland Trail.
