CPD releases surveillance images of vape shop theft

The Chesterton Police Department wants to speak with two persons of interest in connection with a shoplifting on July 18 at the Duneland E-Liquid vape shop at 1050 Broadway.

On Tuesday the CPD released video surveillance images showing a black male subject and a white female subject. The male in particular investigators wish to interview. He’s described as having a thin to medium build, approximately 6’ 0’’ in height, with dark hair and a short beard. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a dark ball cap and a black “Air Jordan” teeshirt.

Anyone who recognizes either the male and or the female or has information about the shoplifting is asked to contact CPD Det. Nicholas Brown at (219) 926-1136.

According to police, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, four subjects entered Duneland E-Liquid, one of whom asked to see an E-cigarette “vape mod.” The owner provided the male subject with a Smok Alien 220 valued at $70, and was then called to the opposite end of the display counter by the other three subjects.

Video surveillance tape “clearly shows” the male subject switch the Alien 220 with another mod he’d had in his pocket, police said. “After a few moments, he gave the item that he originally had concealed in his pocket back to (the owner), instead of giving him the item that had been behind the counter.”

“Not long after his doing so, all four persons exited the store, logging no purchases,” police said.

The suspect was accompanied by two white female subjects and one white male subject.
