Chesterton Police are investigating the arson on Thursday of a recycling bin
at a residence in the 500 block of Wabash Ave.
According to police, at 12:45 p.m. the resident reported returning home to
find neighbors dousing a fire at the rear of her property, in the cement and
cinder block pit where she keeps her recycling bin and garbage can.
It appears as though the recycling bin caught fire and spread to one side
of the garbage can, police said. As the plastic base of the garbage can
melted, it tipped over. The damage is limited to the garbage can and
recycling bin.
Police did say that witnesses observed a couple of people walking east down
the alley just before this happened.
Police estimated damage at $150.
