CPD: Attempted armed robbery of the Broadway smoke shop

A pair of would-be armed robbers fled the Red Carpet Smoke Shop on Tuesday after the clerk refused to open the cash register, Chesterton Police said.

According to police, at 9:27 p.m. the clerk was sitting at the computer, “conducting end-of-the-day business,” when two masked subjects entered the smoke shop, located at 1457 Broadway. One of the two, displaying a “black handgun,” approached the clerk and asked him “for the money out of the register.” The other suspect remained at the shop’s entrance, “propping the door open.”

The clerk, however, told the subject with the gun “No!” and then “just stood in place, out of shock,” and watched the subject “smack” the cash register’s keyboard in an attempt to force it open.

Unsuccessful, the man with the handgun and his accomplice then fled the scene, traveling apparently on foot south through the alley, police said.

A K-9 was unable to establish a track of the suspects.

The man with the handgun was wearing a gray hoody, dark blue jeans, white and black gym shoes, and a blue and white bandana covering his face.

The suspect at the door was wearing blue jeans and dark colored gym shoes with three white vertical stripes on the outside of the shoes.
