A trainee corrections officer at Westville Correctional Facility was
arrested Tuesday on a charge of attempted trafficking, the Indiana
Department of Correction (DOC) said.
According to a statement released on Thursday, on Tuesday Christine Evans,
28, of Valparaiso, was escorted to the Internal Affairs Office after
reporting to work and was believed to have been in possession of a green
leafy substance in a plastic bag.
Evans was then taken into custody and transported to the LaPorte County
Jail.
The incident is still under investigation by the facility’s Internal Affairs
Department to determine if any other individuals may be involved, DOC said.
Evans was hired in August 2012. Attempted trafficking is a Class C felony
punishable by a term of two to eight years.
“We will not tolerate trafficking,” Superintendent Mark Levenhagen said.
“Staff who bring in contraband endanger the safety of everyone, including
those who work side by side with them.”
“It is regrettable that despite all our training and warnings, some staff
simply refuse to accept the responsibility and trust we place in them,” DOC
Commissioner Bruce Lemmon said. “Constant vigilance is necessary to
eliminate such abuses and maintain order within our facilities.”
