A Chesterton man was killed Tuesday in a two-vehicle accident on I-94 in Porter County, the Indiana State Police said.

The victim was identified as Sridhar R. Mothkur, 62.

According to police, at 9:23 p.m. Mothkur was eastbound in the left lane of I-94, traveling at a high rate of speed, when in the area of the 29 mile marker--just east of the scales--he rear-ended a semi-tractor trailer traveling in the middle lane.

Mothkurís 2003 Lexus flipped and rolled multiple times, ejecting Mothkur, who was not believed to have been wearing a seatbelt, police said. Mothkur came to rest on the inner shoulder and was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma by the Porter County Coronerís Office.

Mothkurís Lexus continued to roll and flip, jumping the concrete median wall and finally coming to reset on the inner shoulder of the westbound lanes of I-94.

The trucker, William P. Lantis II, 42, of Stockbridge, Mich., was not injured and there was no loss of his load: 6,980 pounds of miscellaneous auto parts.

Traffic was diverted off I-94 at Ind. 49 for reconstruction and cleanup. All lanes were re-opened at 1:59 a.m. today.

The Chesterton Fire Department responded to the scene, where firefighters provided lighting. The CFD cleared at 10:39 p.m.
