CFD to ensure street addresses are up to code

Back To Front Page

Under Chesterton Town Code, a residential or business street address must be posted in numbers no less than 3’’ in height and no more than 5’’ in height.

And those addresses must be visible from the street on which the structure is addressed.

At Monday night’s Town Council meeting, Fire Chief Mike Orlich announced that his firefighters are beginning an address survey of residential neighborhoods and business districts to ensure that posted addresses are in compliance with Town Code.

The goal is not to fine violators, although violations are subject to a fine, Orlich said. Instead, the CFD’s mission is to increase public safety. Unposted or unreadable street addresses “makes it hard for responders in an emergency.”
