Chesterton firefighters and EMS responded to a child’s seizure on Thursday at Chesterton High School.

Fire Chief John Jarka told the Chesterton Tribune today that, at 5:39 p.m., a 10-year-old attending an event at CHS began experiencing a seizure. When firefighters arrived, they learned that the child’s seizure had ended and that the parents felt able themselves to transport their child to hospital. The CFD cleared the scene at 5:45 p.m.

18th Street Power-Line Arc

Then, at 7:29 p.m., the CFD responded to the 900 block of South 18th Street to investigate a report of an arcing power line. Firefighters found neither an arcing nor a downed line but did learn that lights had been flickering in several homes in the neighborhood, Jarka said. The CFD cleared a few minutes later, with a NIPSCO crew en route to conduct its own investigation.

Centier Bank

Gas Odor

Finally, shortly after 8 a.m. today the CFD responded to the Centier Bank branch at 1600 S. Calumet Road, after receiving a report of a possible natural-gas leak. Firefighters were unable to detect the presence of gas in the bank building but did suspect a creep of sewer gas from a floor drain.

Jarka said that sometimes a rarely used floor drain, particularly in a business, goes dry and allows sewer gas to seep into the building. The CFD poured several gallons of water into the drain, then cleared the scene.
