Porter firefighters doused a car fire on Friday, during the height of the snow storm, at NIPSCO’s Bailly Generating Station.

Assistant Fire Chief Jay Craig told the Chesterton Tribune today that at 7:40 p.m. the PFD was dispatched to the facility after a security vehicle started on fire.

“It was nasty,” Craig said. “It took us forever to get there, trying to drive in the snow.”

On the PFD’s arrival, the vehicle was found to be fully engulfed. The PFD extinguished the fire, then cleared the scene at 8:30 p.m.

The vehicle was a total loss, Craig said.

Icy I-94

In what proved to be a busy weekend for the PFD, firefighters responded to three separate crashes on Saturday morning at the 23 mile marker of I-94. The crashes were all minor ones, Craig said.

That stretch of I-94 is notorious for icing under cold, windy conditions.

Assist to CFD

Then, on Sunday morning, the PFD assisted the Chesterton Fire Department at a house fire in the 1200 block of Griffin Lake Ave. The PFD responded to the scene of the fire but also handled an EMS call in Chesterton while the CFD had its hands full.
