A former friend of a Burns Harbor resident has been charged with burglarizing the resident’s home, pawning his television, and stealing and using his credit card, Burns Harbor Police said.

Michael Sotelo, 23, who has no known address, has been charged with burglary and theft, police said.

According to police, at 10:45 a.m. June 30 a Burns Harbor resident came on station to report the theft of his credit card “by a known subject.” The resident was still making his report when a family member notified him that someone had broken into his home and stolen his TV, police said.

Officers “arrived at the crime scene and reported that the same known suspect was possibly involved,” police said.

A BHPD investigator subsequently located the stolen TV at a Portage pawn shop and at that time identified Sotelo as a suspect in the burglary, police said.

Sotelo was later “found to have used the stolen credit card at locations in Porter and Lake counties,” police said. “There were several video surveillance systems to help identify him.”

Sotelo himself was located and taken into custody by Hobart Police on a warrant charging him with parole violation.

“In addition he was charged with a driving while suspended misdemeanor which occurred during the burglary,” police said.
