Beware call from phony IRS agent: Don't be bullied

Back To Front Page

Neither the Internal Revenue Service nor the U.S. Treasury Department is calling anyone in Porter County demanding prompt payment of back taxes.

It’s a scam, the Porter County Sheriff’s Office said today, in response to a flood of reports over the weekend from folks who’ve been contacted by blackmailing bullies out to make a quick illegal buck.

The scam works this way: someone who calls himself an IRS agent--possibly speaking with a foreign accent--calls to say that you owe back taxes and will be arrested imminently if you don’t pay up immediately.

It just doesn’t work that way, the PCSO said. “As a reminder, the IRS (or the U.S. Treasury Department) will not call you demanding money from you, will not threaten you with a warrant, and will not threaten to arrest you at your place of employment.”

If contacted by a person impersonating an IRS agent, do not give him or her any personal, confidential, or financial information. Hang up and report the call to your local law enforcement agency.

“Please be alert and be vigilant, especially with your elderly, who often fall victim to these types of scams,” the PCSO said.
