A 58-year-old Chesterton man shot himself fatally on Thursday in the parking
lot of the old Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore visitor center, at the
southwest corner of U.S. Highway 12 and Kemil Road.
The incident occurred around 1:08 p.m., Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris
told the Chesterton Tribune today.
According to a statement released by the National Park Service (NPS), hikers
returning to the parking lot heard a “pop,” then as they were leaving the
facility they observed the man in his vehicle.
Harris said that the man fired a single shot to his head and was pronounced
dead at the scene. A .44 caliber Charter Arms revolver was recovered as well
as a note, he added.
No autopsy has been scheduled, Harris said, although the bullet will be
retrieved from the body.
Responding to the scene were NPS rangers, Beverly Shores Police, and the
Porter County Sheriff’s Police.
Rangers accompanied by a PCSP chaplain notified the man’s family.
