Band members injured in I-65 crash

Six members of an indie-pop band from Chicago were injured in a Thursday afternoon crash on I-65 north of Rensselaer, the Indiana State Police said.

Police said that the six members of the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir were taken to nearby and Chicago-area hospitals following the 3:50 p.m. crash at the 218 milemarker three miles north of the Rensselaer exit.

Police said a prelimininary investigation showed that the band’s 1999 Chevrolet van was southbound when one of its tires failed. The van went off the road to the right, then swerved back before going into the grassy median. It then rolled over numberous times, police said.

The front seat passenger, Mark Yoshizumi, had to be extricated and was airlifed to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill., with leg, internal injuries and major head trauma. The driver, Eliezer Santana Junior, was taken to Jasper County Hospital with minor bleeding and a concussion, police said.

Three other passengers, Alison Hinderliter, Ethan Adelsman, and Elias Einhorn, suffered head trauma. The only passenger not wearing a seat belt, Mary Ralph, was ejected out the passenger window and suffered head trauma and a shoulder injury, police said.

The ISP said the band was headed to Cincinnati. All band members are from Chicago.

One lane of southbound I-65 ws closed for about one hour, police said.
