According to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, at approximately 4 p.m.
on Thursday, one of the members of a group of 13 adults and children from
Chicago Heights, Ill. while visiting the West Beach unit notified National
Park Service lifeguards on duty that a 5-year boy had gone missing.
The lifeguards started a land and water search. After approximately ten
minutes, one of the lifeguards found the missing child below the water about
20 yards from the shore, the National Lakeshore said.
The boy was brought to shore where he immediately received emergency medical
care, was transferred to the advance life support unit of the Portage Fire
Department, transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital in Gary and then
airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
An update on the boy’s condition was not given Friday.
West Beach is the only guarded beach inside the National Lakeshore.
