Retired Duneland Schools teacher Ronald West was seriously injured last
month after being struck while riding his motorcycle in Hebron.
According to Hebron Police, at 5:50 a.m. on June 5, West, 72, of Valparaiso,
was southbound on Ind. 2, riding a 2009 Suzuki Sidekick, when a second
motorist, northbound on Ind. 2, attempted to turn left in front of him onto
westbound Boardwalk Street.
HPD identified the second motorist as Nathan W. Johnson, 18, of Hebron.
West sustained “serious injuries to his legs” and was transported to Porter
hospital, HPD said. He was later transported to Christ Hospital in Chicago
for treatment of a head injury.
Johnson—who HPD said registered a blood alcohol content of .02 percent—was
charged with minor consumption of alcohol and issued citations for failure
to yield and minor operation of a vehicle with a B.A.C. of at least .02
percent but less than .08 percent.
HPD estimated total damage to West’s motorcycle and Johnson’s 1999 Pontiac
Sunfire at up to $10,000.
