The Indiana State Police reminds Hoosiers that only persons over the age of
18 may purchase fireworks.
And a person 18 or older must be present when anyone younger than 18 is using
or possessing fireworks.
Fireworks may only be discharged on the user’s property, the property of
someone who has given permission for them to be discharged, or a place
designated by the State Fire Marshal for the discharge of consumer fireworks.
A person who violates this law may be charged with a Class C infraction. A
person who recklessly or intentionally uses fireworks and damages property
may be charged with a Class A misdemeanor. If there is bodily injury, the
charge may be enhanced to a Class D felony; if a death results, the charge
may be enhanced to a Class C felony.
Lt. Lou Brown, commander of the ISP Lowell District is urging adults “to be
responsible and constantly monitor children who use fireworks. All fireworks
can be dangerous if not used properly. We want your Fourth of July to be a
safe one.”
And one more time: the days and times for the legal discharge of fireworks in
the three towns of Duneland and in unincorporated Porter County:
•From June 29 through July 3, and from July 5 through July 9, between 5 p.m.
and two hours after sunset.
•On July 4, between 10 a.m. and 12 a.m.
•Between 10 a.m. Dec. 31 and 1 a.m. Jan. 1.
Also: Fireworks are prohibited inside the boundaries of the Indiana Dunes
National Lakeshore.
