A Liberty Township man died Friday of injuries sustained in a three vehicle
accident on Thursday at the intersection of Ind. 49 and C.R. 600N in Center
Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.
The victim has been identified as Eugene A. Thomas, 80. He was pronounced
dead at 3:10 p.m. after being airlifted to an Illinois hospital.
According to police, at 4:26 p.m. on Thursday, Thomas was eastbound on C.R.
600N in a 2003 Jeep Liberty when he collided with a second vehicle
southbound on Ind. 49. The second vehicle then struck a third vehicle facing
eastbound in the intersection.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban, was Tracy L.
Gluth, 44, of Washington Township. The driver of the third vehicle, a 2005
Honda CRV, was Diane Duval, 58, also of Washington Township.
Both Gluth and her passenger, Tyler F. Gluth, 19, complained of chest pain,
police said.
East- and westbound motorists on C.R. 600N have stop signs at the
intersection of Ind. 49, and police said that Thomas failed to yield
right-of-way.
Police estimated total damage to all three vehicles at $25,000.
