Three people were charged Thursday morning for burglary, a class C felony,
Chesterton Police said.
The three were identified as Michael Kramer, 18, of Hammond, Ann Margaret
Zimmerman, 39 of Edwardsburg, Mich. and Johnny White, 18, of Hammond.
According to police, at 4:23 a.m. on Indiana Ave. and Chesterton Blvd.,
police stopped a red 2003 Oldsmobile for traveling the wrong way on a one-way
road. The vehicle pulled to the side of the road at Chesterton Blvd. and
Indiana Ave. Approaching the vehicle, the officer observed several items
located on the rear passenger seat partially covered by a leather jacket.
Items in view were an electric hand saw, a table chop saw and a large leather
Harley-Davidson jacket.
The driver, Kramer, 18, told police they were headed back to their hotel. The
officer said he smelled the odor of burnt marijuana inside the vehicle.
Zimmerman, registered owner of the vehicle, said they had been smoking
marijuana earlier and she gave permission to have her vehicle searched.
Officers were assisted by Porter County Sheriff’s Department with a K-9
search.
During the search, police located an Indiana vehicle registration card and
other items that listed the name and address of a resident on the 2100 block
of W. Porter Ave., who had earlier reported the theft of items from his
vehicle.
Also found in the vehicle was a garage door opener that had been reported
takenfrom a victim on 17th Street, who also reported a Harley-Davidson jacket
and red/black tool box stolen from his garage.
In addition to the charge of burglary, Kramer was charged with never
receiving a license, a class C misdemeanor. He was also issued a citation for
traveling the wrong way on a one-way road and for driving while
suspended/infraction.
