A Griffith woman has died after a two vehicle crash on I-65 Monday.
Indiana State Police report that at approximately 12:00 Noon Trooper Dan
Tschida responded to a two vehicle crash at the 239.6 mile marker just south
of the Lowell exit.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a black 2007 Chevrolet was traveling
in the right lane and a gold 1999 Chevrolet was in the left lane north bound
on I-65 when the two cars crashed in a same direction sideswipe.
The driver of the black Chevrolet, Sarah Aeppli, 35 of Rensselaer, Indiana,
was able to keep control of her vehicle and pulled over onto the left
shoulder. Neither she nor her two occupants were injured.
The vehicle sustained approximately $2,000 in damage to the driver’s side.
The driver of the gold Chevrolet, Janet Klamm, 50 of Griffith, Indiana, lost
control, left the roadway to the right, went down an embankment and flipped
over.
Klamm was thrown out of her vehicle which then hit a tree.
Her husband, Kenneth Klamm, a passenger in the car had to be extricated from
the vehicle.
Janet had her seat belt on but was not wearing it properly.
A dog in the car was pronounced dead at the scene.
Janet and Kenneth were both taken to Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point
were Janet was pronounced dead of massive internal injuries. Kenneth had
complaint of pain, abrasions and contusions.
Both lanes of I-65 north bound were closed for approximate three hours for
reconstruction of the crash, removal of the injured and their vehicle, police
said.
