It’s unclear at this point why a Chesterton man being held at the Porter
County Jail died on Monday.
According to a statement released by the Porter County Sheriff’s Police
after deadline on Monday, at 5:45 a.m. David Alan Downey, 47, was found
unresponsive in his single cell by jail officers conducting rounds. Staff
administered CPR on Downey, who was then transported to Porter Valparaiso
Hospital Campus, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Downey arrived at PCJ on Friday to turn himself in on two active warrants
charging him with failure to appear, police said.
An autopsy conducted on Downey on Monday failed to establish a conclusive
cause of death, Coroner Vicki Deppe told the Chesterton Tribune
today, although she did say that “there were no physical signs of trauma or
injury.”
“Nothing jumped out” at the autopsy, Deppe said, and the results of a
toxicology screen will not be available for some time. “We’re still doing
testing and blood work,” she added.
