More than $300,000 in cash was recovered from a vehicle on Thursday after a traffic stop on I-65 in Jasper County, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 12:15 p.m. Charles R. Allen, 30, of Emeryville, Calif., and his passenger, Sivon P. Smith, 26, of San Francisco, Calif., were stopped at the 225 mile marker, five miles south of the Demotte exit, for unspecified traffic violations.

After making contact with Allen and Smith, police said, the trooper “became suspicious of possible drug activity” and conducted a “free-air search of the vehicle” with his K-9 partner, Ryker, who subsequently alerted to the vehicle.

The vehicle was then searched and $315,288 in cash was discovered in three suitcases, police said.

“One of the subjects stated that the money was from ‘side jobs’ but they had not claimed it on taxes,” police said.

Allen and Smith were transported to Jasper County Jail and charged with money laundering, a Class C felony punishable by a term of two to eight years.
