A Lake Station man apparently fell from the Ripley Street overpass in Lake Station on Saturday to I-80 below, where he was struck by a vehicle and killed, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 6:10 p.m. a trooper was dispatched to I-80 at the Ripley Street overpass in response to a report of a body lying in the middle lane, shortly after an earlier witness had reported a person’s acting suspiciously on the overpass.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Rodney Lee Shelton, 45, fell from the overpass and struck a car, then after landing in the roadway was struck by another vehicle.

Shelton was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroner, police said. He sustained massive head and body trauma.

No foul play is suspected at this time, police said. The investigation is continuing.
